Beads of perspiration gathered on his forehead as the moments ticked away. His eyes almost strayed toward the oasis that was within reach but he couldn’t lose focus.
Not now. Not at the most crucial juncture.
Something flew within his range of vision and his hand twitched ever so slightly to ward it away. It was distracting him from his target. At the other end was his enemy, going through the same agony as he was. But he couldn’t help him. Not this time.
When it looked like it would be too late, the clock struck the hour and both antagonists relaxed, slumping their shoulders from the effort. Instinctively, they both lunged for the prize , but he got there first.
“Sorry, Satan, old boy. You’ll have to practise playing ‘Statue’ a bit longer, I’m afraid. I got the Amazon rain forest this time.” Saying so, God smiled at his verdant piece of Heaven on earth.
