The Frantic Quest

She flung the bed covers off, searching in cold panic. Her mind worked furiously. She had to find it. It had been there! Right on the table next to the bed. Or was it in the folds?

Straightening up, she glanced around and her eyes fell on the umbrella, its shade tilted, at an angle that seemed to mock her.

Breathing deeply, in gusts that tightened the knot in her chest, she remembered now. Cautiously, she closed the parasol and saw the ring lodged on the top. Sighing, she slipped it on and watched her reflection in the mirror disappear.
