They have eyes that do not blink,

Words that have no sound,

Hugs that do not physically reach

All the way around.

Their shoulders are but symbolic

You cannot literally rest your head there;

They have  not the power of touch

To make you feel the warmth when you are blue.

But they are as real as you want them to be

For they are not just your connections;

They are your friends

through thick and thin.

So what if a flimsy thing called a social network

Separates you from them?

In my world, they are as important

as my family, my neighbours and my soulmates.

They are bloggers, they are writers,

They are moms and they are storytellers,

They are my Facebook friends whom I have never seen:

They are my world within a world.

  1. What a beautiful poem! And I agree, Shailaja. Thanks to the wonderful world of blogging, I now have friends who mean a lot more to me than some of the people in my life. Some of them have made a profound impact on me!

  2. Aww….Shailaja, that is so true! My FB friends, my blogger friends, are my world, who mean a lot to me. I can totally relate to your poetry. Before I joined FB, I was one lonely soul. My world was my home. I had totally lost touch with my friends after leaving my job. But, then FB happened, and blogging happened, and my world was lively, all over again! The kind of happiness I get from communicating with my net friends, is indescribable. And, thus, every time I meet someone with whom I bond instantly, I pray I have that friend with me all my life. ( And, this goes for a certain blogger friend, who has become a very dear friend of mine, and who means a lot to me! 🙂 )

  3. Nice one 🙂 I was thinking you had written about your friends in real life, but you went a step further and wrote about your virtual friends 🙂
